Maxine Mae Payton, loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend died on July 27. She is now home with the Lord.
Memorial service on Tuesday, July 31 at 10:30 at Christ UMC, 14506 E 39th St, Independence. Visitation with family begins at 9:15.
Arthur and Gwendolyn Chinn brought Maxine into the world on May 29, 1925 in Kansas City, MO. She lived most of her adult life in Independence. Loving, caring, strong, determined, dignified, organized – all describe her character. Married to Dean Payton for 63 years, Maxine will be remembered by many for 27 years in Human Relations with the JC Penney Co., 50 years as an active member of United Methodist Women, 11 years as a docent for the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, and for riding thousands of miles across America on the back of her husband’s motorcycle (mostly scared beyond belief!). To her family and closest friends, she will be remembered for her lessons of deep and abiding care for aging elders, boundless love for the children in her extended family, and modeling the roles of matriarch and steadfast friend.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband in 2010.
She is survived by son Gary (Nancy), grandsons Ian (Charity), Adam, and Graham, and great grandchildren Alec and Tessa; sisters-in-law Patty McLees, Mary Chinn, and Margie Chinn; nieces Susan Guerrero, Barbie Marquis (Keith), Laurie Lentz (Chad), Lisa Gard (Dennis), nephews Fred Weatherford (Elaine), Paul Chinn (Lisa), and Rich (Holly) Chinn, and 14 great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ UMC.
