Elma A. Penrose, 94, of Independence, MO passed away Friday, January 3, 2014. A family internment service will be held separately at Mt. Washington Cemetery and a Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18th at Liberty Street Community of Christ. Elma was born April 22, 1919 in Perry, IA to Frederick Allen and Eunice Annice (Davis) Settlers as one of nine children. She was raised in Aurora, IL where she attended school. She moved to Independence in 1950 where she married Walter Penrose on July 19, that same year. Together they raised three children. Elma worked and retired from the Medical Center of Independence as a Nurses Assistant. She was a life long member of the Community of Christ Church, most recently the E 39th Street Congregation. Elma enjoyed cooking, sewing, dancing, and doting over her family. She is loved and will be missed. Elma is survived by son, Larry W. Penrose and wife Marsha; daughter, Ada Ann Seelinger all of Independence, MO; daughter-in-law, Jan Penrose and fiancé Bill of Lake St. Louis, MO; granddaughters, Emily Penrose-McLaughlin and husband Jeff; Shelley Penrose and fiancé Austin Pittman; grandson, Brett Penrose; great-granddaughters, Avery Noel McLaughlin and Arielle Penrose; brother, Marvin Settles of Aurora, IL; sister, Mary Jane “Janey” Buchanan of Yuma, CO; and numerous other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband; son, Terry L. Penrose; granddaughter, Michelle Rose Mitchell; brothers, Eljay, Arnie and Roy Settles; and sisters, Orpha Tater, Veronica Datschefski, and Evelyn Juhnke.
