Joan Lee (Poe) Phelps, 82, Independence, MO passed away Thursday, September 4, 2014.
Joan was born October 26, 1931 in Connersville, IN, the daughter of Alfred E. and Kathryn Louise (Treadway) Poe. She taught English from 1951 to 1961 in the Kansas City School District and was a founding member of the American Federation of Teachers, later known as the Missouri Teachers Association. Joan was a member of the Community Christian Church and taught the Town and Campus Sunday School Class. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim T. Phelps, Sr. in 2004; brother, Robert Poe, and her parents.
Survivors include her children, LeeAnn Scott (David), Laurie Brewer (Jay), Jim T. Phelps, Jr. (Seana); grandchildren, Travis Scott (Kristin), Casey Peppers, William, Tyler and Zack Schmaus, Felicia and Dylan Phelps; great grandchildren, Blake, Dalton and Chase Scott and Olivia Peppers.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2014 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014 at the funeral home.
