Shirley Elaine Phillips, 78, of Independence, MO passed away August 22, 2014. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 11:00 am, at the Carson-Speaks Chapel. Visitation will be prior to service beginning at 10:00 am. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery. Shirley was born in St. Joseph, MO to James and Leona (Feiden) Hayward. She attended the Independence Sanitarium Nursing program and obtained her RN. Shirley was employed as a registered nurse for about 30 years when she became a paraplegic. She has been an ordained minister over twenty-two years. Shirley took a writing class from the Institute of Children’s Literature. She was a YouthFriend Volunteer and was placed on the Partnership for Children’s Honor Roll for her many hours or reading to the Head Start preschoolers. She was also a published author. Her children’s book “The Best Gift” is still available from WestBow Press. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Lynda Phillips.
