Dorthy Helen Phipps, 82 of Independence passed away Wed. Sep 28, 2005 at her home surrounded by her family. Services will be 2:00 pm Sun, Oct 2, at the Grain Valley Community of Christ Church, 32901 E. Pink Hill Rd. Grain Valley, MO 64029.. Burial in Buckner Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 - 8:00 pm Saturday at the Speaks Buckner Chapel, 300 Adams, Buckner, MO. Contributions are suggested to the Grain Valley Needy Assistance Fund in care of the church or to the Salvation Army. Mrs. Phipps was born on Mar 28, 1923 to Will and Melissa (Lent) Butterfield in Des Moines, IA and had lived in Creston, IA before moving to the Independence area, nineteen years ago. She along with her husband, Sherman had previously owned and operated Phipps Construction Company and Phipps Fabric Store in Creston, IA. Dorthy was an outstanding Artist and an Art Teacher. She loved to travel on motorcycles with her husband and sons. During those travels she would get her inspirations for some of her paintings. She was a wonderful homemaker and was a Mom and Grandmother to many as well as opening her home to those in need. She was an active member of the Grain Valley Community of Christ Church. Dorthy was a long time member of the Independence Art Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman R. Phipps in 1987. She is survived by two sons, Sherman W. Phipps and wife, Cheryl of Lamoni, IA and David L. Phipps and wife Julia of Des Moines, IA. Two daughters, Becky Ertle and husband, Herbert of West Branch, IA and Pam Miller and husband Ray of Independence, MO. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren and their spouses .
