Thomas “Tom” R. Place, Jr., 77, Independence, MO passed away Aug. 28, 2017. No services will be scheduled. Private burial will be at Buckner Hill Cemetery.
Tom was born Sept. 28, 1939 in Kansas City, MO and graduated from Lee’s Summit High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He worked for
AT & T for twenty-seven years and was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Independence. He served as the Salvation Army Chaplain for a time in Independence. He managed his wife Jo Ellen’s Gospel singing career for twenty-seven years as she recorded albums and had a regular television show which produced eighty-six episodes. He had a “Green Thumb” and was very particular about his flower gardens, trees, plants and yard.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Thomas R. Place, Sr. and Willameta (Reed) Place. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years Jo Ellen Place; brother Carl A. Place and wife Edrey; nieces Kimberly Brosam and husband Eric; Karen Browning and husband Matt; great-nieces Tessa Brosam and Lauren Browning.
