Josephine K. Proffitt, 91, Independence, MO.; formerly of Kansas City, KS., passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at St. Mary�s Hospital of Blue Springs, MO., after an extended and courageous battle with Alzheimer�s disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 p.m. Friday, September 5, at St. Mark�s Catholic Church in Independence. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, KS. Visitation will precede services from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday at the church. The family suggests contributions to Alzheimer�s Association, Heartland Chapter, 3846 W. 75th St.; Prairie Village, KS, 66208. Josephine was born June 4, 1912 in Kansas City, Kansas to Matthew Koenig and Johanna (Poznic) Koenig. She spent her early childhood and young adult life in Kansas City, KS, and on April 6, 1930 married Wallace B. Proffitt, Sr., who preceded her in death on January 9, 1986. Josephine was an avid quilter and created many beautiful quilts over the years for family members and friends. She never met a stranger and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a member of St. Mark�s Catholic Church. She was employed at the Medical Depot in Kansas City, KS during WWII and later at Bendix Corporation, where she retired on August 25, 1969. Also preceding her in death was her son, Wally Proffitt, Jr., on March 9, 2003, and a sister Anne M. Uhlir in 1995. Survivors include her daughter Dolores (Dee) Nick and husband, Bob of Independence, MO., a sister Elizabeth Ragan of Kansas City, KS; three grandsons, Wallace L. Proffitt, and Dennis S. Proffitt, both of Kansas City, KS; Michael D. Proffitt of Overland Park, KS; seven great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and two nieces. The family extends a most sincere thank you to the caregivers of St. Mary�s Manor, Blue Springs, MO., who gave such tender, loving care to "Mama� Jo., and to the nursing staff at St. Mary�s Hospital, God Bless!
