Raymond (Ray) G. Fanning Jr., passed away on October 19, 2024, in Independence, Missouri, at the age of 62. Born on October 11, 1962, in Beardstown, Illinois, Ray’s life was marked by a deep love of the Lord, laughter, and a profound commitment to all he held dear.
Ray worked as a technical designer for Black and Veatch for 41 years. He loved his job. It was a testimony of his integrity, and his actions always showed that whatever you do in word or deed, do it heartily, as for the Lord (Col. 3:23) . He was known not only for his professional skills but also for his role as a handyman; always the one to lend a helping hand, he took joy in sharing his knowledge and teaching others how to repair anything from household items to cars. Ray’s strength was particularly evident as he faced the challenges of his battle with cancer. Despite the hardships, he remained courageous and selfless, rarely complaining and instead focusing on uplifting those around him. His quiet strength resonated deeply with his family and friends, who found comfort in his unwavering support and encouragement. A man of faith, Ray served three pastors in different capacities: a chair of the board, the head of deacons, and a board of trustees member. One of the positions he loved best was serving as a youth pastor. He taught God's Word; he and his wife would take the youth to church camp every year. It became a family vacation. He made an impact on so many lives. Not only were his children involved with him but nieces and nephews as well.
His family was his proudest accomplishment, and he loved engaging them in activities that fostered their growth, teaching lessons of stewardship. He often spent time volunteering and assisting within his church community, further illustrating his dedication to service and reverence. He held a special place in his heart for his wife, Sherry, whose cooking brought him great delight, with chili and pot roast being among his favorites. Ray had an affinity for the simple joys in life; he found happiness in playing card games with his loved ones and treasured the memories created during family travels. He treasured his family, cherishing every moment spent with each of them.
Ray's passing was preceded by his father, Raymond "Bob" Fanning. His legacy lives on through his best friend and wife of 42 beautiful years, Sherry Fanning; his children, Amy Hill (Josh), Danielle McGuire (Justin), and Michael Fanning (Alissa); his grandchildren, Valerie McGuire, Oliver McGuire, Charlie Hill, Benjamin Hill, and Aidan Fanning; his siblings, Stan Fanning and Christine Kirkpatrick; and his mother, Reva Fanning.
