Doris M. Reed passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Kingswood Senior Living Community Assisted Living in Kansas City, MO.
She married the man of her dreams, Harley Reed, on April 12, 1941 and moved to his farm near Sibley, MO where she resided until moving to Kingswood in 2010. Doris was a farm wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and sister. She and Harley were selected as young farmers of the year by the Jackson County Farm Bureau in 1948 due to their innovative farming methods. Later she assisted Harley when he became an agent for Concordia Farmers Insurance. Doris touched many lives during the course of her life especially young people. She spent many hours as a volunteer at historic Fort Osage, was a member of the Fort Osage Chapter of the DAR and longtime member of the Napoleon United Methodist Church in Napoleon, MO. She and Harley traveled to Texas, Colorado, Wyoming and other western states.
Doris’ interest in history led her to researching the genealogy of her family; collecting and sharing information on the history of Jackson County; and following the 200th anniversary re-enactment of the Lewis and Clark expedition in 2004 - 2006. She enjoyed quilting and made quilts for all her family, jigsaw puzzles, reading, but most of all she enjoyed her family spending quality time with all of them. After Harley died in 1992 Doris traveled extensively including Canada, Europe, most of the 50 states, and her dream trip to South America where she traveled 900 miles up the Amazon River.
She leaves behind two daughters, Gail Schumacher (Jim Fisher) of Broomfield, CO and Anna Marie Reed (David Parker) of Kansas City, MO and 5 grandchildren: Steven Schumacher of Tampa, FL, Jennifer Rogers (Joseph) Morrison, CO, Beverly Bodman (Mark), Colorado Springs, CO, Angela Valentine (Bret) Oak Grove, MO and Elizabeth Harris, Gladstone, MO and 3 step-grandchildren, Jayson (Jennifer) Parker, Jennie (Jeremy) Bjorem , and Wendy Stookesberry (Mark), Centennial, CO.
In addition she has 8 great-grandchildren and 6 step-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews and her sister, Mary McPheeters. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harley Reed, sisters and their spouses: Irene Hinkle (Everett), Ruth Orth (Glen), brother-in-law Charles McPheeters.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Speaks Buckner Chapel, 300 Adams, Buckner, MO. Services will be on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at 10:00 AM at Napoleon United Methodist Church, 385 W. Church St, Napoleon, MO. Burial following at Buckner Hill Cemetery, Buckner, MO.
