Mary Reed

Mary Elizabeth Reed, 85, of Independence, MO, passed away, Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at her residence. Services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Friday evening at the chapel. Donations may be made in her name to American Heart Association or to Messiah Lutheran Church 613 S. Main St. Independence, MO 64050. Mary was born November 2, 1924 in Blue Earth, MN to Dennis and Thea (Johnson) Shay. She grew up in MN and graduated from Blue Earth High School before moving to Independence in the mid 1940’s. She had first worked for the telephone company and then supported the war effort by working at Lake City Ammunition Plant and later worked for the Independence School District. She retired in 1989 as cashier of the nutrition center at Independence Regional Health Center where she had worked since 1968. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and was also a Girl Scout leader. She was married to Daniel Reed on June 20, 1946; he preceded her in death in November of 1998. She is survived by; a son, Danny Joe Reed and his wife Gay of Troy, MO; 3 daughters, Dennice Lovercamp and her husband Dennis of Grain Valley, MO, Doraee Reed and Darla Cardenas and her husband Mike all of Independence, MO; a brother, Marcellus Shay and his wife Pat of St. Paul Park, MN; 9 grandchildren, Jeff Reed (Jessica), Julie Francis (Darren), Brett Reed (Jamie), Tony Lovercamp, Melissa McKinley (Shawn), Danielle Lares (Eric), Dustin Reed, Kirsti Rubino (Jon) and Michael J. Cardenas (Jessica) and 14 great grandchildren.
