Richard D. Smothers

Richard D. Smothers, 81, of Peculiar, MO, passed away on September 17, 2023. He was born on September 26, 1941, in Independence, Missouri. Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.

Richard had a zest for life and enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and beloved pets. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or simply relaxing at home, he cherished these moments with his loved ones. He often told us that he felt a closeness with God when he was in the outdoors connecting with nature.

Richard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda (McConnell) Smothers, his son Rick Smothers and wife Candy, Son Ron Smothers-Shamshum and husband; daughter Lori (Smothers) Holmes and husband Carl. He was also a loving Grandfather of six grandchildren and Great-Grandfather of nine. He was preceded in death by his father Stephen Smothers, mother Donia (Rutherford) Smothers, brother John Leroy Smothers, and sister Lonia Epperson.

Richard attended William Chrisman High School and later served in the U.S. Army. He served his country and was dedicated to his military associations. He was also a member of The Eagles Lodge #3667 and the Elks Lodge of Clinton, Missouri.

Throughout his career, Richard worked as an independent contractor and prior to his retirement served as a superintendent for PSI Cooling Towers of Golden, CO.  He was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his profession.

A "Celebration of Life" to honor Richard's life will be held at 10am on Friday, September 29th at Speaks Suburban chapel located at 18020 E. 39th Street in Independence, Missouri. The funeral home will be assisting with the arrangements. He will be laid to rest in Appleton City, Missouri Cemetery.

Richard will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
