Richard Neal VanCleave, born and raised in Independence, Missouri, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the age of 74 with his beloved children by his side. Richard was a passionate artist whose legacy will live on in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his sister, Beth Copeland (Pete), his children Erin VanCleave, Adriane LaCaze (Terry) as well as his granddaughters Brenna and Maeryn. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and cherished wife, Jennifer Maloney.
Throughout his life, Richard demonstrated a deep love for art, music, and history. His creative spirit shaped many aspects of the Kansas City arts scene. He worked for the family-owned VanCleave Banknote Printing Company and later served as a guard and docent at the Kemper Museum of Art. He was a frequent participant in installations and art shows around the Kansas City area, including at The Writers’ Place, Aha! Dance Theater, and the Lawrence Art Center. He also did set design for New Ear, Eric Satie and Gorilla Theater.
Having gotten a degree in Art from Central Missouri State University, he passed on his creative wisdom to his family whom also participate in the arts. Richard was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, always ready to share stories and memories with them and about them. He had many fond moments with his late wife Jennifer and their friends within the Kansas City food industry and art scene, where he was known for his warmth, humor, and zest for life.
A man of vast knowledge and a true lover of the arts, Richard will be remembered for his contributions to the creative community, his infectious enthusiasm for music, and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Rest in peace, Richard. Your creative spirit will continue to inspire and enrich the world.
