Jerry Richards, 98, of Independence, MO passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2019. A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Monday, March 4, 2019 at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th St, Independence, MO, 64055. A service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, March 5 at the chapel. He will be laid to rest at Mound Grove Cemetery.
Jerry was born on February 17, 1921 in Redman, MI to Lewis and Vera (Chape) Richards. After completing high school, he enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines. Jerry proudly served during WWII. He liked to work in his garden, carve wood, and travel – especially to Disney World. He really loved dachshunds, having them as pets during most of his life. Jerry was always a gentleman and instilled hard work and honesty in his family. He always laughed and truly enjoyed his life.
He will be remembered by his son Blair Richards and wife Phyllis of Oak Grove, MO; daughters Marla Jones and husband Kenneth of Independence, MO, and Alison Adams and husband Richard of Sibley, MO; sister Maxine Lorenz of Lansing, MI; grandchildren Tara Lamb, Ben Adams (Jaclyn), Erick Richards, Emily Twiehaus (Kurt), Ryan Jones (Katie Piedmonte), and Garrett Jones (Claire); 14 great-grandchildren and 1 more on the way; plus several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Evelyn Richards, sister Mildred Richards, step-mother Elsie Richards, and brothers Roland, Lewis, and Wilbert Richards.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association or Wayside Waifs.
