John Richey, Jr.

John H. Richey, Jr., 73, of Independence, MO went home to be with the Lord on December 11, 2007 at his home after a long battle with MS. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, MO. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas. John was born on July 6, 1934 in Sedalia, MO. He graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1952. John met and married his wife, Frances, in Fort Scott, KS, where he began a career, which he loved, as a newspaper pressman. He first worked at the Fort Scott Tribune, and then for 34 years at the Independence Examiner. As a young man, John also served his country in the U.S. Army stationed in Thule, Greenland. He was also a long-time member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Independence, MO. John was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Richey and Lillian (Bailey) Richey; and a granddaughter, Brandi Ann Wendleton. He leaves a devoted family; a wife of 51 years, Frances (Chapman) Richey; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Gary Wendleton; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Sheri Richey; and five grandchildren, T.J., Amy and Adam Wendleton and Anna and Emily Richey all of Independence, MO; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Peggy Richey of Fort Scott, KS; a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Harold Mason of Peculiar, MO; a sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Junior Peterson of Fort Scott, KS; as well as a loving extended family, a brother-in-law and wife, James and Elizabeth Chapman of Independence, MO; a sister-in-law and husband, Paula and Ricky Graham of Independence, MO; a sister-in-law, Virginia Warren of Independence, MO; a brother-in-law, Emmett Chapman of Fort Scott, KS; a brother-in-law, Joe Chapman of Independence, MO; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. The family requests contributions in John’s memory to be made to Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Independence, MO, and to Odyssey Hospice of Kansas City, MO.
