Jay M. Ricketts, 78, of Independence, MO passed away on August 12, surrounded by his family and friends. He was a fourth generation Arkansan, born in Bentonville, AR, to R.H. “Jack” Ricketts and Noline (Porter) Ricketts, who preceded him in death. His brother, Rue Ricketts, also preceded him in death. Jay married Jane (Williams) Ricketts on October 17, 1965, in Lucerne, MO. They were blessed with a 53-year marriage and two wonderful daughters, Christina and Denise. Jay attended Frances Willard Elementary School and graduated from Paseo High School in 1958. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science from Central Missouri State University. He served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps and his community for 30 years with the Kansas City, MO, Fire Department. He was a 25-year member of Local 42, International Association of Firefighters and was elected Vice President and later Secretary-Treasurer of that organization. Jay also served five years on the Kansas City, MO, Firefighters Pension Board. He retired from the fire department in 1995 with the rank of Deputy Fire Chief. Jay loved working in his yard, “piddling” in the house, and cheering on the Arkansas Razorbacks. Jay is survived by his wife, Jane, of the home; daughters Christina Marra of Lee’s Summit and Denise Schwartz (John) of Blue Springs, MO; five grandchildren, Michael Marra, Caroline Marra, Jaylie Giles, Brandon Schwartz and Carter Schwartz who were the most important people in his life. They will miss their Pawpaw terribly. Jay also leaves a sister, Nancy Thompson (Rick) of Belton as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and large extended family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Surviving Spouses and Families Endowment Fund (SAFE) 3100 Broadway, Ste. 226, Kansas City, MO 64111. It supports families of Kansas City area public servants lost in the line of duty.
