Roger Manly Umsted, known for his dedicated career spanning over 40 years with Burlington Northern Railroad, passed away in Independence, Missouri, on March 6, 2024. He was 93 years old. Born in Dayton, Iowa, on September 7,1930, Roger's journey through life touched the hearts of many.
In 1951, Roger was drafted into the Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. His commitment to duty reflected his strong character and values. After his tenure with the railroad, Roger transitioned into sales where his charm and dedication won the admiration of all his customers. His work ethic and friendly demeanor left a lasting impact on those he interacted with. Beyond his professional life, Roger found joy in various hobbies and interests. He met the love of his life, Marilyn, during high school, and their bond remained strong throughout the years. They devoted their lives to one another just days before he was drafted to serve in the United States Army. He was very active throughout his life, enjoying baseball, golf, and even bowling with Burlington Northern Bowling League, creating cherished memories with friends. Roger also found solace in nature at Stockton Lake and took pleasure in simple activities like reading and tending to his lawn.
Roger is preceded in death by his parents; Forrest and Ida Umsted, his siblings; Mary Ann Hanson, Irwin Umsted, Forrest Umsted, and Robert Umsted, and his son; Ricky Umsted. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years; Marilyn Umsted, his children; Randy Umsted (Ada) and Roma Prins (Martin), his siblings; Rosemary Kaufman (Joe), Richard Umsted (Nancy), and Gary Umsted, his grandchildren; Chad Rowe (Christy), Alex Prins (Natalie), and Angela Prins, his beloved pet; Buffy, as well six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services to honor and remember Roger Manly Umsted will be held at Carson-Speaks Chapel in Independence. A visitation will take place on March 12, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM followed by a funeral service beginning at 10:30 AM. A graveside will take place immediately following the chapel service at Mt. Washington Cemetery.
