Roy F. Holmes

August 30, 1936 — October 18, 2024

Independence

Roy F. Holmes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 18, 2024, in Independence, Missouri, at the age of 88. Born on August 30, 1936, in Sylacauga, Alabama, Roy lived an extraordinary life full of passion, laughter, and love.

Roy dedicated over thirty years of his life to General Motors, where he made a name for himself in various positions, with a primary focus on repairs. His reputation for tackling any mechanical issue with skill and expertise was well-known. If it was broken, Roy could fix it—and his talent was a testament to his industrious nature. Beyond his career, Roy's zest for life was infectious. He was often described as a "wild child," embodying an adventurous spirit and an unwavering love for his family. His heart was made of gold, and he was always ready with a joke or a smile to brighten the lives of those around him. Roy's ornery sense of humor brought joy to gatherings and left memories that will be cherished by so many. An avid "car guy" since childhood, Roy's passion for automobiles started at the young age of fourteen when he built a Jeep from scratch. He loved sharing this enthusiasm with his children, teaching them the mechanics of cars and the joy of hands-on work. Notably, he had the honor of working on Harry Truman's car before it was retired to the museum—a proud achievement that underscored his skills and dedication.

Roy enjoyed hunting pheasants, deer, and geese, forging lasting memories with friends and family in the great outdoors. Fishing was another pastime that brought him peace, allowing him to connect with nature and spend quality time with loved ones. With his best friend and devoted wife, De-De, by his side, Roy found immense joy in traveling. They relished road trips across the country, frequently visiting Branson to immerse themselves in vibrant, live country music. The legacy that Roy leaves behind is not merely one of a skilled mechanic or an adventurous spirit; it is one rooted in the deep bonds of family. His proudest accomplishment will always be the family he built with De-De. Their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren were the lights of his life. Roy was their biggest cheerleader, always there to support them in their endeavors.

Roy's passing is preceded by the love of his life and wife of 67 joyous years, Gloria "De-De" Holmes; his parents, Arthur and Mae Holmes; and his siblings, James Clyde Holmes, Mary "Frances" Gove, Lee Holmes, Bobby Holmes, John L. Holmes, and Jewell Holmes. His legacy lives on through his daughter, Denise Mathers (Shawn); sons, David L. Holmes (Valerie) and Roy Dale Holmes; grandchildren, Danae, David, James, Lindsey, and Jordan; and great-grandchildren, Bryce, Alyssa, Carynah, Desaraye, Molly Kate, and one more on the way; and his great-great grandson, Ronin.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life during a visitation on October 23, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Both services will take place at Speaks Suburban Chapel located at 18020 East 39th St S, Independence, MO 64055. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roy's memory to Traditions Hospice.
