LaVone Russell of Independence, Missouri passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. One month after her 100th birthday. She was born to Henry and Maude Meggers in Independence, Missouri.
LaVone was brought up in a dedicated family for the Lord. With such dedication to church that lasted a lifetime. Much of her life was spent traveling, a favorite pastime.
LaVone’s life was filled with volunteer work. She spent 27 years as supervisor of the primary department of her Sunday school, gray lady at Mercy Hospital, Cancer volunteer at St. Lukes Hospital, a member of the Laura club and women's leader at the Stone Church. She was a funeral coordinator within the church, vacation bible school leader and did crafts for reunion at Lake Doniphan. She was a charter member of Good Sam's club for 43 years and 25 years in the birthday club.
LaVone also took great pride in being known as “The Christmas card Lady” at the nursing home. She always made sure that every single one of the 70 plus residents of the nursing home had a Christmas card to open every single year. Her heart was big and she left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. LaVone lived a full life and will be missed greatly.
She was preceded by Virgil Sr., husband of 57 years and son, Virgil Jr. Her father, Henery Meggers; mother, Maude (Lane) Meggers and brother and sister Elmer Meggers and Emma Steckel.
She leaves behind a son, Robin (Linda) Russell; grandchildren, Kristy Treat, Troy Russell, Kim Wheeler, Rod Russell; great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. Nieces, Louise Smith, Linda Meggers, Deena Levine and nephew, Clifford Meggers.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 7th from 9-10am at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Mo. Funeral service will begin at 10am with entombment to follow at Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, Mo.
