John Roy Schieszer, 97, a long-time resident of Independence, MO, passed away November 2, 2017.
John was born, raised and graduated from high school in Marshall, MO. He was the fullback on the football team and did shotput and discus on the track team. He played two years of college football before enlisting in the Navy, serving in the Pacific as a Seabee during WWII. After the war, he married and settled in Independence where he had an active church life and coached Cub Scout softball. He played fast-pitch softball as an adult, possessing a mean rise ball as a pitcher and he was always a threat to go deep from either side of the plate as a hitter. John retired from a career in maintenance supervision from Certain-Teed Fiberglass in 1982. During retirement, he built a woodworking shop and crafted items that he sold at local craft fairs and festivals. John was an Elder in the Community of Christ church, performing weddings, baptisms and funerals for many families in the East Independence neighborhood. He spent the last 17 years of life without the love of his life, his wife of 53 years, Willa.
John is survived by sons Greg, (Judy) of Prairie Village, KS; Joel, (Lisa) of Camano Island, WA, and Mark, (Debbie) of Sibley, MO. John’s grandchildren are Jon Schieszer, (Jodi) of Redondo Beach, CA; Brett Schieszer, (Ashleigh) of Cincinnati, OH; and Shannon Cox, (Josh) of Sibley, MO.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm, Sunday, November 19 at the East Independence Community of Christ church.
