Roger Schmitz, Sr., 96, of Raymore, MO, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, MO.
Roger Wilford Schmitz Sr. was born on June 23, 1926, in Seneca, KS to William and Alice (Savejo) Schmitz. He was the second youngest of 11 children. Following his early education Roger attempted to join the US Navy but was unable to due to his age. On October 6, 1944, he joined the US Army and served during WWII. He earned many medals including a Purple Heart while serving his country. Roger was honorably discharged on July 13, 1946. After returning home he met the love of his life, Florence Hopkins and they were united in marriage on September 1, 1949, in Kansas City, MO. Roger worked as a printer for Western Typesetting until his health forced him to retire. Following his retirement, he worked for Fordyce Concrete for a few years.
Roger will be remembered for his love of his family and friends; his leadership as a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #421, watching war shows from the 1950’s and 1960’s, his volunteer work with St. Bernadette Catholic Church and taking pictures.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his five children, Roger (Jolene) Schmitz Jr., Cecelia Theresa (Terri) Schmitz, Joseph (Teresa) Schmitz, Zachary Schmitz and partner, Mary Signer, Gerilyn Schmitz and partner, Mike Smith; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Florence on November 5, 1994; son, William (Bill) Schmitz on April 15, 2001; his parents and 10 siblings.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 9020 E. 51st Terrace, Kansas City, MO, 64133. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church until the time of mass. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery following mass with military honors.
