ELIZABETH ANN (WHIPPLE) SCOTT
Elizabeth Ann Scott (known by many as Betty, and formerly as Elizabeth West), 78, of Independence, MO passed away Friday, June 6, 2014 at her home surrounded by loved ones. A visitation will be held from 2:00-3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 13th at East 39th Street Community of Christ Congregation; 15006 East 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the church
Elizabeth was born March 29, 1936 in Groton, CT to Alma and Dora May (LeMoine) Whipple as one of six children. At nine years old, her family moved to Independence, MO where she graduated from William Chrisman High School. While working at the Forum Cafeteria in Kansas City, she met and married Charles Sager (deceased). They had three daughters together and were active members of the Enoch Hill Congregation. She attended the School of Cosmotology, receiving her certificate in hair dressing. She worked at Sudora’s and later in her home cutting and styling hair for family and friends. After Charles’ death, she married Denzil J. West. They had one son together. Elizabeth and Denzil were active members of East 39th Street Community of Christ Congregation for over 30 years. While there Elizabeth sang in the adult choir, sang solos for services, and directed the children’s choir for over 20 years. She took voice and conductor lessons at the Conservatory of Music UMKC. She sang yearly in the Messiah at the Community of Christ auditorium. She was ordained a priest. She was in charge of the Women’s Bread Baking Days. She also worked as a volunteer for Laurel Club. Elizabeth worked for Herald House Bookstore and for Herald House Publishing. Later she attended Ridgewood Pleasant Heights Congregation where she met and married George O. Scott (deceased). Two years after George passed, Elizabeth met and later married Manuel D. Liddell. The last 15 years she attended Unity on the Plaza. Elizabeth spent her life loving people. Her hands were always busy cooking, sewing, making hand-made quilts, designing jewelry, knitting scarves, and keeping a clean and inviting home for anyone who entered. She loved hosting family gatherings and game nights with friends. In the last few years she wrote several songs for the piano which she played and shared with many. Elizabeth was love in its purest sense. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by husband, Manuel Liddell of the home; daughters: Susan Crowder and Gina Kennedy of Blue Springs, MO and Julie Salazar of Independence, MO; son, Eric West of Lee’s Summit, MO; grandchildren: Kelli Gonzalez, Joseph Crowder III; Jordan, Zachary, and Nicholas Salazar; Sydney and Conor Kennedy; and Skyler West. Great grandchildren: Jackson, Colton, and Sofia Gonzalez; as well as numerous other family and friends. Elizabeth was preceded in death by brothers: Arthur, John, and Paul Whipple; sisters: Eunice “Elaine” Beedle and Lillian Rammer, and her parents.
