Vern Dale Scott, 88, of Independence, Missouri passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at Villages of Jackson Creek Memory Care, Independence, Missouri, November 26, 2017. A visitation will be held from 2-4:00 p.m. followed by a 4:00 p.m. service on Monday, December 4, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. A graveside inurnment will be held at White City, KS Cemetery with family and friends at a later date.
Vern, a good man, loving husband, father and grandfather, was born November 17, 1929 to George E. Scott and Dora (Bean) Scott in White City, Kansas. Vern was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter Saundra Kay Carpenter, brother George Junior Scott, and sister Norma Jean North. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Marilyn (Barber) Scott of the home, son Michael D. Scott and wife Theresa (Teri) of Bates City, Missouri, son-in-law James C. Carpenter of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, granddaughters Keighly (Kevin) Hahn, Kelsey Carpenter, Kendyl Carpenter, all of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Kaylen (Aaron) Pigg of Orrick, Missouri, and four great grandchildren, Karleigh, Kyler, and Kroy Hahn, and Triton Carpenter, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Vern graduated from White City, Kansas High School in 1947. He entered the United States Air Force in 1950, completed basic training along with specialized training in deciphering radio traffic, code-breaking and International Morse Code. He and Marilyn were married October 17, 1951 in White City, Kansas. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas until his deployment to Japan. He served in Korea until 1954 as part of the Air Force Security Service. He was awarded The Bronze Star for heroic or meritorious achievement or service, along with several other service medals. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veterans Association, and the Tirey J. Ford American Legion Post where he served as a member of the honor guard. He visited elementary and high schools where he talked with students about his experiences in Korea. He was active in the Junior Achievement program for local high schools as a business advisor.
Vern graduated from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas School of Engineering with a Bachelor Degree in industrial engineering in 1958. He worked for several companies in the Kansas City area until his retirement from Clay and Bailey Manufacturing Company. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends, attending his favorite country and bluegrass festivals, and spent a lot of time with his beloved granddaughters, He used his expertise in various home construction projects, including room additions to the home he shared with his wife Marilyn, adding a third story to the home of his daughter Saundra and her husband Chris, and helping his son Michael and his wife Teri with the interior finish on their home. He was skilled in woodworking, furniture making, and carpentry and made many beautiful items that are treasured by his family.
He served his community as an election judge, and was a charter member of Christ United Methodist Church, in Independence, Missouri.
Many of Vern’s friends were fellow veterans, most of whom he could swap stories with, any time, any where. He will be dearly missed by those friends and, most of all his family.
