Mary J. Searcy, 91, of Independence, MO, passed away Wednesday, January 11th at the home of her granddaughter. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 17th at Carson-Speaks Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Monday in the chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice or the American Heart Association. Mary was born February 18, 1914 in Independence, MO to Albert J. and Ella I. (Garland) Cookston. Mary was a personal assistant to Mr. & Mrs. Stover while working at Russell Stover Candies. She went on to work at General Motors before retiring in 1970. Family was the focus of Mary�s life. Mrs. Searcy was a talented seamstress designing and sewing clothing without a pattern. She was also a cake decorator known for her beautiful creations. Mary is survived by her daughter Charlyne Mortimer of Portland, OR, son and daughter-in-law Charles Searcy and Betty Sanders of Bates City, MO, daughter Marlyne Schooler of Blue Springs, MO; seven grandchildren Kara Mortimer, Shannon Mortimer both of Portland, OR, Casey Searcy of Kansas City, MO, Shelley Langerock of Independence, MO, Todd Schooler of Mulvane, KS, Amy Alderman of Lee�s Summit, MO, Michelle Sanders of Bates City, MO; sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters Jesse (Happy) Elliot and Marjorie (Punch) O�Dell; and six nieces all of Independence, MO. She was preceded in death by her brother Samuel A. Cookston and sister Louise McDonald.
