Joe Allen Serig, 83, of Independence, MO died peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning, October 6, 2018. Joe was born April 18, 1935 in Wheeling, West Virginia to Louis and Loma Ward, his mother Loma died when Joe was 3 years old. Joe was a resident of Mooseheart Child City and School in Illinois for his middle and high school years when his father was stationed in Cuba. In 1953 Joe attended Graceland Junior College in Lamoni, IA where he met his bride, Beverly Wilson. Joe and Beverly Married in 1955 at Liberty Street Congregation in Independence by Dr. Roy Cheville and promptly moved to San Jose CA to complete their college degrees in Education. He taught Junior High there and later became a Junior High School Principal. Joe, Bev and their four children moved to Independence MO in 1971 when Joe became an Appointee for the Community of Christ Church in the Christian Education Department. He received his Ph.D. in Higher Education from UMKC in the mid-70’s. Joe was ordained an Apostle in the Community of Christ Church in 1982 and served the California, Native American, Europe and Africa regions for 20 years. Joe was preceded in death by his brothers Jack and Charles “Bus”; he is survived by his brother Ward, his wife Beverly and their four children Debbie LaLone and her husband Marvin, Margie Mims, Craig Serig and his wife Lisa, Daniel Serig and his wife Angela, along with 8 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren. Cremation with a memorial visitation will be held Friday October 12, 2018 from 6 to 8:00 p.m., at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m., with visitation preceding at 9:30 a.m. at Woods Chapel Community of Christ, 500 NE Woods Chapel Rd., Lee's Summit, MO 64064.
