Merle L. Shafer

March 6, 1917 — August 4, 2005

Merle L. Shafer, 88, passed away at the Liberty Hospital on August 4, 2005. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, at the Salem Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Alzheimer�s Association, Liberty Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. Merle was born in Elm, MO, and graduated from Central Missouri State University with a degree in education and a Master�s Degree in counseling. He served as a science teacher and later was the home-school coordinator for the Independence School District. One of his great interests was his farm and developing a herd of registered Angus cattle. In 1954 he was married to Eleanor Creason, who was teaching at the time. Merle was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Pacific Theater on New Guinea during WWII. He was also a former member of the Independence Host Lions Club. He is survived by his wife and a number of nieces and nephews.
