Donna Shaffer

Donna Mae Shaffer, 83, passed away February 3, 2014 at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri. She was born in Moorhead, Iowa on March 30, 1930 to Leslie David Outhouse and Gladys Muzetta Nuzum. She grew up on the family farm in Iowa. In 1948 she graduated from Soldier High School where she was a cheerleader and played 6-on-6 basketball. She married Charles Henry Shaffer on May 7, 1951. During their marriage they lived in several places and located in Independence, Missouri in 1976.Donna worked as a Certified Medication Technician at Resthaven (The Groves) for 18 years where she developed many lasting friendships with co-workers. She was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church and served others through her work with Gather In. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles “Chuck” Shaffer in December 2006; daughters, Bonnie Jean in June 1963 and Roxanne in October 1961, and her beloved dog, Cookie. She is survived by her sisters; Delora Davis (Lyle) of Cameron, MO., Dorothy Poling-Howard (Willis) of Rapid City, SD., Doris Mann (Loren) of Woodbine, IA., and brother David Outhouse (Marna Weisenborn) of Harlan, IA.; her daughter, Jan Wilson and husband, Thad; her son, Randal Shaffer and wife, Robin; her grandchildren, Roxanne Monroy (Victor), Matt Wilson (Shannon), Van Wilson (Katie Landry ) and Ross Shaffer (Rita); 8 beloved great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews Donna’s life was centered on her family. She was a devoted caregiver. She was known for her cinnamon rolls, chicken and noodles and potato salad prepared for family gatherings. Her kind and tender spirit touched many lives. She loved the farm, especially wandering through fields of wildflowers and taking care of the little animals. She was proficient at driving a team of work horses (Dolly and Kit) and spent many hours pulling weeds out of the oat fields. The family is grateful for the wonderful care she received from the nurses, physicians and staff at Centerpoint Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Community of Christ Cornerstone Congregation 1316 S. Osage, Independence, MO. 64055.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation www.cff.org
