Katie Shalton
Katie Shalton, 85, of Independence, Mo. died July 26, 2006 at her home. A Parish Rosary will be recited at Carson-Speaks Chapel on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. followed by a visitation until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anns Catholic Church in Independence, Mo. Katie was born on July 4, 1921 in Cement City, Missouri one of ten children born to Andrew and Anna Lusek Lukomski. She was a graduate of William Chrisman High School. Katie surrounded herself with family, friends and good neighbors for a lifetime. Her laughter brightened every occasion. Her cabbage rolls were legendary. Having never known a stranger, she would acquire new friends every Royals baseball season. A baseball fan of the Cubs as well as the Royals, she still had her 1985 World Series Game 6 ticket stub. A lifelong Catholic, she attended St. Anns Saturday afternoon Mass, which freed her up to enjoy a Sunday at the riverboats. Slots were her choice of entertainment and her most impressive win of $3,750 came aboard ship during a four generation cruise in the Caribbean. Her passing leaves a giant hole in the world of her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joe who died in 1989, by a son, Gary Shalton and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by a son Lonnie Shalton and his wife Rita Leifhelm of Kansas City, Mo., a daughter-in-law, Rita Shalton of Independence; five grandchildren, Brian Shalton, Stacey Anderson, Wendy Dye, Angela Bernard, and Jason Shalton, thirteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Anns Catholic Church, Independence, Mo., or to Catholic Community Health Care (Hospice), 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Ks. 66102.
