Betty Loraine Shelton (Murphy), 90, of Independence, MO, died on February 4, 2022 at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was born May 29, 1931 to Everett Price Murphy and Marie (Akins) Murphy in St. Joseph, MO. She met John Richard Shelton on a blind date set up by her sister in 1949. Betty and John (Corkey) wed three months later and were married for 58 years. She had always wanted a big family and was blessed with four children, Judy, Sherry, John Jr. and Robert.
Betty ran an in-home daycare for over 40 years and was blessed to be a part of the lives of many children. She always provided an open door to welcome and take care of everyone.
She was a member of Sycamore Hills Baptist Church for over 45 years. She was very involved with her Sunday School class, senior choir and other church activities. She was an avid reader, loved bible studies, journaling and embroidery (including making blankets for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren),
Betty is survived by her daughters, Judy (Roger) Moorman of Windsor, CO and Sherry Magel of Independence; son, Reverend Robert (Sandy) Shelton of Plattsburg; daughter-in-law, Terri Shelton of San Diego, CA; sister, Jan (Dominic) Allegro of Kansas City; brother, Everett (Freda) Murphy of Blue Springs; two grandsons that she raised, Jarad (Samantha) Shelton of Independence and Sean (Morgan) Shelton of Lee’s Summit and ten additional grandchildren: Brad Moorman, Bruce Moorman, Troy Shelton, Nichole Williams, Bryan Moorman, Melissa Bloomfield, James Shelton, Erin Wilkerson, Luke Shelton, and Zachary Shelton and 25 great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Richard Shelton; son, John Richard Jr.; grandson, Jonathan Paul Sloan and two sisters, June & Julia.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sycamore Hills Baptist Church or First Baptist Church, Plattsburg Building Fund in memory of Betty Shelton.
