John Shelton, 77, of Independence, MO passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. John was born in Kansas City, MO on February 5, 1930 to Mallard James Shelton of Eldon, MO and Bessie Mae Travers of Fairfield, IL. He was the third of seven children. His mother Bessie died when he was 16 years old and his grandparents, Jacob and Carrie Travers, raised the Shelton children. John married Betty L. Murphy on October 22, 1949 in Kansas City, MO. He was employed at Armco Steel for 35 years before his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church. John was a family man who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
John is survived by his wife, Betty of the home; daughters Judy Moorman and husband Roger of Fort Collins, CO and Sherry Magel of Independence; son Reverend Robert Shelton and wife Sandy of Plattsburg, MO; brother Arthur (Fred) Shelton and wife Sharon of Independence; 13 grandchildren: Brad Moorman, Bruce Moorman, Troy Shelton, Jonathan Sloan, Nichole Williams, Bryan Moorman, Melissa Bloomfield, James Shelton, Erin Wilkerson, Jarad Shelton, Sean Shelton, Luke Shelton, and Zachary Shelton; nine great-grandchildren: Elin Moorman, Devan Moorman, Leian Shelton, Christopher Sloan, Christian Sloan, Riley Williams, Tasmin Moorman, Talan Williams, and Maili Shelton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Richard Jr. on September 6, 1992; and five siblings: James Shelton, Norman Shelton, William (Jack) Shelton, Nancy Keith, and Mary Brown.
A visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM Friday, January 11 at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave. and funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday at the chapel with burial at Mt. Washington Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Sycamore Hills Baptist Church Building Fund.
