Russell Jerome “Jerry” Sherman, 84, passed away on September 10, 2017, in the care of Pinnacle Ridge Nursing and Rehab in Olathe, KS.
Jerry was born on March 31, 1933, in Independence, MO, to Ronald and Rosamond (Filson) Sherman. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in the class of 1951. Later that year, he began his Bachelor’s degree at Graceland College in Lamoni, IA. In 1953, he transferred to Central MO State University in Warrensburg, and completed his degree in Business Administration. After graduating, he married Celia Fry, and to this union were born six children. He entered into the United States Navy, and was discharged in April of 1956. He spent the next twenty years as a commercial pilot for TWA. Upon retirement, he spent his days helping Celia at their store, “Sherman’s Odds and Endtiques,” which operated on the Independence Square from 1979-1999.
As a youth, Jerry was involved in playing volleyball. In adulthood, he had numerous roles, including serving as Executive Vice President of U.S.A. Volleyball from 1988-1992, and President from 1992-1996.
Jerry and Celia were long-time members of Walnut Gardens Community of Christ. Jerry was an ordained Elder and a youth leader. He was one of the original directors of “Spectacular,” the largest youth gathering in the Community of Christ, and was awarded the International Youth Service Award.
Jerry will always be remembered for his sense of humor and storytelling skills. He cherished coming home to his family and sharing a new joke, and the tales of “Farley Farquire” and “Wocka-Wocka” were family favorites.
Jerry is survived by five children: Brian Sherman (wife Kelly), Craig Sherman (wife Robin), Stuart Sherman (wife Amy), Jill Sherman, and Melissa (Chris) Sanders; seven grandchildren: Sterling, Kyle, Eli, Wyatt, Dylan, Lukas, and Morgan; and numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Celia; and son, Mark Alan Sherman.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 22, at 2:00 p.m., at Walnut Gardens Community of Christ, 19201 E. RD Mize Road in Independence.
On October 1, 2017, Jerry’s daughters and family are participating in the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s.” Consider donating to this very important cause in care of “Jerry’s Kids” in his honor.
