Laura L. Shockley, 90, of Independence, Missouri, passed peacefully at home on Monday January 10, 2022.
Laura was born in West Fork, Arkansas, on October 15, 1931, daughter of Melvin and Odelle Chamberlain. Laura was the youngest of 11 children and was preceded in death by sisters Vivian, Ruth, Irene, and Janet (Tootie), and brothers Bob, Herbert, Jesse, Howard, Russell, and Elmer Glen.
Laura enjoyed travel, family vacations, reading, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles and spending time with friends. She was an avid baseball fan and loved watching the Royals, however, the most important thing to Laura was family. During her 63 years of marriage to Sherman Shockley, she raised four children and is survived by sons Larry Shockley, Keith Shockley and daughter Cherry DeWeese. Laura has a large extended family and was diligent about keeping in touch with relatives. She was particularly close with her niece Brooksie Bothwell and greatly enjoyed their morning chats.
Laura was a beloved grandmother to 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman, and son Kelly Shockley.
While raising her family, Laura attended nursing school and graduated from the Jennie Lund School of Nursing in 1973. Laura enjoyed a 17 year career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital in Independence, Missouri.
Laura was an active member of the First Christian Church of Independence, Missouri, and volunteered for their outreach community program, Tabitha’s Closet, for over a decade. Visitation will be on Tuesday January 18th at 1:00pm, with services starting at 2:00pm at Carson Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO 64052. Internment will immediately follow at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens, 18301 E. Salisbury Road, Independence, MO 64056.
