Josephine Shumaker
November 30, 1919 — January 25, 2018
Josephine “Jo” Spence Shumaker, 98, of Independence, MO passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 at Kansas City Hospice House, with her family nearby. A visitation will be 6-7pm on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th St, Independence, MO, 64055. A memorial service will follow at 7pm.
Jo was born in Columbia, MO on November 30, 1919 to Rose (Gibbs) and Estil Spence. She grew to adulthood in Clarksville, MO at Overlook Farm that sits even today on a bluff above the Mississippi River. She (a math major) met Willis Shumaker (a civil engineer major) at MU. They married in 1942 and together they had 4 children. She lived out her life as a homemaker, mother, caretaker, and wonderful grandmother. She was loved for her excellent cooking and sewing skills…which she had a good eye for color and design. She enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and lived abroad for a year each in Calgary and Trinidad.
Jo will be remembered by her children Marilyn Lowrey (Bruce), Paul Shumaker (Dianne), Karen Wheeler (Ron) and Wayne Shumaker (Eliza); ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Willis, her brother Jim, her sister Jewell, and a son Paul Kenneth Shumaker.
The family suggests that contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Independence.
