John Reid Shumway, 85, of Gladstone, MO passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the Woodbine Care Center in Gladstone, MO. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the Christ the King Catholic Church in Kansas City, KS. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:00 a.m. at the church. Mr. Shumway was born on October 29, 1917 in KC, Kansas to Jay and Anna Shumway. John retired from the Wabash Railroad and ran his own traffic consulting business in St. Joseph, MO. He also taught Interstate Commerce Law at the UMKC School of Law. He had served as a Deputy Sheriff in Taney Co., MO, was the President of the Kansas City Traffic Club, past Master of the Forsythe Lodge, Standing member of the St. Joseph Scottish Rite and was a published writer of poetry and short stories. He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Tessie S. Hicks. He is survived by one daughter, Martha Harriet Maher; one brother, Earl Miller; one sister, Ellen; five grandchildren, Maura, John, Faye, Nellie and Maggie; and eighteen great grandchildren.
