Geraldine "Gerry" Mae Simmons, age 94 of Independence, Missouri died peacefully in her sleep at The Groves in Independence, Missouri on October 29th, 2018. Born January 18th, 1924 in New Castle, PA, she was preceded by the love of her life and late husband Dorn D. Simmons, and daughter Ruth Stafford, both of Independence, Missouri. Gerry worked as a MedTech at Resthaven Nursing Home in Independence for many years up until retirement age. She was a member of RLDS church all of her life and attended services regularly up into her 70's. A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Gerry enjoyed cooking for her family during the holidays, and canning large batches of tomato juice with husband Dorn from tomatoes they grew in their garden. The love they shared was immeasurable and rare. After retiring, some of her cherished memories to share included road trips that her and Dorn took, and stories of growing up in the 1930's and 1940's. She recalled as a young woman having to “paint” her legs instead of buying nylons due to the war effort. She had wonderful stories to share with her family. Gerry is survived by three sons, Larry Simmons and his wife Brenda, David Simmons and his wife Bobbie, Mark Simmons and his wife Teresa. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Burial will follow in Mound Grove Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m., until service time Friday at the chapel.
