Rev. Cato Sims, Sr., 89, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018. A visitation will be held from 9-10am on Friday, July 6, 2018 at Carson-Speaks Chapel 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO, 64052. A service will follow at 10am. He will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens.
Rev. Sims was born on May 26, 1929 in Holmes County, MS to Sam and Viola (Howard) Sims. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He actively served from 1951-1953 and was in the reserves from 1953-1959. On June 25, 1951 he married his hometown sweetheart, Versa Travis. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and a master’s degree from St. Paul School of Theology. Rev. Sims was a man of faith, ordained Elder in the A.M.E. Church in 1969 and later in the United Methodist Church where he was a current member. He and Versa served numerous parishes in Missouri and Nebraska over the years. In 1997, Rev. Sims retired from the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing gospel songs on the piano and loved being around people, especially children. He believed all people were good.
He will be remembered by his children Bob Sims and wife Charlene of Jefferson City, MO; Cato Sims, Jr. and wife Patty of Independence, MO; Denise Walker of Kansas City, MO; Naomi Cole of Independence, MO; JoAnn Sims of Suwanee, GA; and Rosie Sims of Omaha, NE; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, daughter Gwendolyn Sims, and wife Versa Sims.
