Vern A. Sinclair, 92, peacefully passed away with his loving family at his side on Monday, August 25, at The Groves. A visitation will be from 9:00-11:00am Friday, August 29, 2014, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055, with a funeral service at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Mound Grove Cemetery.
Vern was born June 27, 1922, to Mabel and Glen Sinclair in Independence. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in the class of 1940. He attended both William Jewell and KU for a year each before joining the Coast Guard in 1942 where he served 4 years playing French horn in the band. They traveled the world during the war, encouraging and supporting the troops.
After World War II, he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with degrees in Chemical Engineering and Zoology. Vern married Ruthel Ellen Payne on December 18, 1949. They moved to Michigan where he graduated from the University of Michigan with a Master’s degree in music in organ and French horn performance. He taught in New Hampton, Iowa before they moved back to Independence to build their home and raise a family. Vern retired from the Kansas City School District in 1984. He played French horn in the Independence Symphony for 60 years as well as Starlight Orchestra over many summers.
He served as an Elder in the RLDS church from 1966 until his death. He was a current member of Farview Restoration Branch. Vern loved the Restored Gospel, his Heavenly Father, and his family. He enjoyed many hobbies.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clarence, Vaughn, and Lloyd. He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Ruthel; daughters: Marilyn (Tom) Bitzer, Carol (Kim) Cunha, Barbara (John) Allinder, Sandy Sinclair; five grandchildren: Chad Hurt, Clay Cunha, William Cunha, Emily Scott, and Katy Allinder; 5 great-grandchildren: Ian, Addie, Max, Cooper, and Reese; cousins: Wayne Kearns, Dorothy Soper, and Carol Wielegman. The family would like to thank the caring team of The Groves Community Hospice as well as the staff at Rosewood. The family suggests contributions to The Groves Community Hospice or a future scholarship to be established for a French horn performance major.
