Mary Slama

August 6, 1926 — November 18, 2013

Mary “Grace” (McCoy) Slama, 87, Independence, MO passed away on November 18, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where her father was a fur trader for the Astor Fur Company.

She is survived by her husband John, of the home; daughters Laura Jach (Roman), Independence, MO; Teresa Longanecker (Gary), New Athens, IL; Claudia Chandler (Henry), Acworth, GA; Angela Chambers (Denny), Kingsville, MO; sons Bradley White (Jeanie) Pompano Beach, FL; Kevin White (Jessica) Augusta, GA; and David White, Kansas City, MO; and stepdaughters Elizabeth Slama Richman, San Lorenz, CA; and Julie Slama, New York, NY; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her daughter Deborah Meeker (Wally) of Springfield, MO; her parents; and her brothers Frank, Bill, and Claude.

Grace was a caring and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who devoted her life to God and her Family and, through her own example, demonstrated the true meaning of love and happiness. Her greatest joy was being with “her Johnny” and her family, laughing, singing, and enjoying life to its fullest. She is with God now, but she will always be with us in our hearts and spirit. She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Mary Catholic Church and was also a member of the Darrell Bland Sertoma Club of North Kansas City, MO.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO. A Catholic rosary will be said at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church; 600 N. Liberty St., Independence, MO with Father Matthew Bartulica officiating. Interment will be at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO.
