John Arthur Smith, 79 of Independence, MO passed away Friday, December 22, 2006 at Monterrey Park Nursing Center. Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the South Crysler Restoration Branch. Visitation will follow until 8:30 p.m. at the church. Cremation is planned. Donations may be made to the Center Place Restoration School. Mr. Smith was born August 17, 1927 in Marshall, MO to Walter E. and Beulah Armenta (James) Smith. John was a lifelong educator who began his career in teaching public schools in Osborne, KS before moving to Leavenworth, KS to become the Principal. He then moved to Independence, MO and worked as Administrator for CMSU in Warrensburg, MO. He then was Dean of Admissions for KSU in Manhattan, President of Southwestern Community College, Vice President of Park College, ending his career as the first administrator for the Center Place Restoration School in 1996. He was a member and High Priest of South Crysler Restoration Branch and enjoyed playing golf and reading the scriptures. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy having served 2 years in each branch. He is survived by; his wife of 55 years, Miree Smith of the home; children, John Allen Smith and his wife Vickie of Creston, IA, Leanna Blair and her husband Randy of Pryor, OK, Robin Smith and his wife Tami of Phoenix, AZ and Stephen Smith and his wife Sharon of Independence, MO; 3 brothers, Joseph Smith of Spring Hill, KS, Willard Smith and his wife Dianne of Omaha, NE and Jim Smith and his wife Isabella of Independence, MO; 2 sisters, Elsa May Brooks and her husband Albert of Mt. Joy, PA and Carol Barnes and her husband Donald of Sedalia, MO; 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous extended family in the area.
