Lonna R. Smittle, 63, of Independence, MO passed away January 14, 2017, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 23, at Christ United Methodist Church, 14506 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. A visitation and reception will take place at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Great Plains ASPCA in Independence or Christ United Methodist Church in Independence. Lonna was born August 9, 1953 in Kansas City, KS to Jack and Rachel Mayhugh. She was the youngest of two children. Lonna graduated from Truman High School in 1971. She attended NWMSU for two years and completed her B.S. at the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1976. She always had a song in her heart. Lonna was a choir member in High School, at both Universities, and later sang with her church choir. She spent 10 years at Macy’s but her real passion was her time spent with the Junior Service League, both as an active member and later as a sustainer. She also was a member of the board at the historic Vaile Mansion and truly enjoyed her time spent with the volunteers there. She enjoyed concerts, sailing and time spent with her many dear friends. Lonna was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother Dwight. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Mike; aunt, Alice Sanders of Longview, WA; sister-in-law, Sandy McGinnis and her husband Wally; two nieces, Cassandra Rashman and husband Lee, Carrie Cooper; one nephew, Jarrod McGinnis and wife Gretchen; and seven great nieces and nephews, Corinne, Davis and Miles Rashman, Jack Cooper, Ingrid, Millicent and Sybil McGinnis; along with her beloved pets.
