John LeRoy Smothers, “Lee,” passed peacefully at the Rosewood Health Center on Friday, February 13, 2015, in Independence, MO, at the age of 78.
Mr. Smothers, a lifelong resident of Independence, is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Nadine; children: Mike Smothers and wife Rhonda, of Springfield, Greg Smothers and his wife, Linda, of Smithville, and Stacey Hamann and husband Vance of Blue Springs; one brother, Richard and Linda Smothers, of Deepwater, MO;six grandchildren: Steve, Kimberlea, Allison, Ryan, Abby, and Kaitlyn; and one great-grandson, Bennett.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Donia Smothers; sister, Lonia, Epperson; and one granddaughter, Amber.
Lee was born on July 15, 1936, in Independence, Missouri. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1955. He married Nadine Marie Jackson, his high school sweetheart, in 1955. Lee was a plater, carpenter, and millwright, and retired from Union Wire and Rope. Lee was a Scout leader, a member of the Tribe of Mic-o-Say, and a Zion’s League Leader. Lee was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer, and enjoyed anytime spent outdoors. Lee loved his family and will be missed by many. He loved the Lord, and was an active and dedicated member and an ordained deacon of the New Walnut Park Community of Christ Church.
Family will receive guests on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, from 6-8:00pm, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO. A funeral is scheduled for 10:00am Wednesday, February 18, 2015, at the chapel, with burial following at Lobb Cemetery.
