Lois Marie Smythe, 72, Independence, MO formerly of Winston-Salem, NC passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
Lois was born July 18, 1940 in East St. Louis, IL the daughter of Richard and Lillian (Schaffer) Meyer. She was a school teacher for the Catholic Schools when she was younger. Before moving to Independence in 2009 to be close to her family, Lois volunteered with numerous groups in Winston-Salem including the Good Samaritan Soup Kitchen and prison ministries. Lois was an active member of her church in Winston-Salem and The Church of Jesus Christ Restoration Branch in Blue Springs. She was a gracious host to everyone who knew her and they even called her “mom”.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Truman Smythe in 2007; sister, Ardeth Launius, and her parents.
Survivors include her sons, Dennis Smythe and wife Yunhi of Anchorage, AK, Larry Smythe of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Ryan, Angela, Camile and Lindsay Smythe, Rusty Lewter and Kevin Nash; sister, Cheryl Parrish and her husband Greg; nieces and nephews, Jamie, Jordan and Jenna Parrish, Laurie Hawley, Mel, Jeff and John Launius and additional family.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Parkview Community of Christ; 801 SW 19th St., Blue Springs, MO 64015. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Camp Opportunity; PO Box 13, Independence, MO 64051.
