August A. “Gus” Spencer, 78, of Independence, MO was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 19, 2010. Services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, 100 N. Pleasant, Independence, MO 64050. Visitation will be two hours priors to the service from 1-3:00 p.m. at church. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation, 404 Portland, Columbia, MO 65203 or to the church. Burial in Salem Cemetery. Gus was born October 10, 1931 in Kansas City, MO to Marcella and Frances Spencer. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Spencer retired from TWA in 1992. He was an active and faithful member of the church serving as a Trustee. Gus was a past-president of the Eastview Lion’s Club and a member of AARP. He was part of two groups of friends that met for coffee during the week on Tuesdays and Fridays, and his church buddies on Thursdays. Mr. Spencer was an avid KC Royals fan and loved traveling and working in the yard in his spare time. Gus is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Jan (Kidd) Spencer; children Deborah Morris and husband Bill, David Spencer and wife Karen, Debra Roberts, Bill Westmoreland, Brad Westmoreland and wife Heidi, Diane Spencer Cook, Barry Westmoreland; grandchildren Nicole and Brent Fullerton, Heather and Ryan Caughron, Jason and Mendi Spencer, Jill Spencer, Bridget and Ryan Schinstock, Nathan Roberts, Olivia Westmoreland, Luke Westmoreland, Angie Olsen and Sasha Shaver; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ellie and Fred Royal. Gus was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
