Jack R. Spencer, 68, of Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2003. He was born October 29, 1934 in Fairfield, Ill. To Paul W. Spencer and Grace V. Compton and was a member of Birchwood Baptist Church in Independence. Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at Birchwood Baptist Church, with inurnment in Mound Grove Mausoleum. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. After graduating from Fairfield High School, Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country for twenty years. Throughout this journey he married his wife of 44 years, Pat, and traveled the world. Retiring in 1972 from the Air Force, Jack started his second career with Cartwright Van Lines. Thirty years later, he retired as their Vice President/Treasurer. Along with his wife, Pat, Jack passionately enjoyed watching all of his grandchildren�s activities and was known to sponsor various teams and individuals. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia N. Spencer, and father, Paul Spencer. He is survived by his son, Steven R. Spencer and his wife, Miriam Spencer of Liberty, MO and his daughter, Angela Spencer-Nowlin and her husband, Dale Nowlin of Independence, MO. "Pops� grandchildren include Stephanie Spencer, Shane Spencer, Lance Spencer, Lakie Spencer, Michael Nowlin and Marc Nowlin. Additional survivors include his mother, Grace V. Mayer, his sisters, Marjorie Johnson and her husband Ruffin, and Sandra Blackburn, all of Houston, Texas, nieces Patricia Oeffinger and Kellie Blackburn and nephew, Bradley Leathers, and special friend, Molly Hollett. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Truman High School, c/o Mr. Gary Bressman, 3301 S. Noland Rd., Independence, MO 64055. These funds will be used to complete the effort started in February of 2001 when his wife passed away to provide new equipment for the weight room to benefit and enable student-athletes from all walks of life.
