David Gordon Sperry, 62, of Independence, MO passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. A visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2009 at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Cremation. David was born August 18, 1946 in Kansas City, MO to Dr. Earle and Mary (Winslow) Sperry. He graduated from William Chrisman high school in 1964 and from UMKC in 1969. Mr. Sperry then attended Law School at the University of Mississippi at Oxford. He was admitted into the Missouri Bar Association on April 27, 1974. David practiced law in the Independence area his entire career, first with Paxton & James, then James & Sperry, and finally in association with Dennis Waits. He was also admitted before the United States Supreme Court on March 26, 1990. Mr. Sperry was an Eagle Scout in Troop 206, lead by his father Dr. Earle Sperry. He was a Shaman in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, “Little Swirling Mist”. David spent numerous summers on staff at the H. Roe Bartle Boy Scout Camp in Osceola, MO, where he continued his lifelong passion for the out-of �"doors. He also continued his father’s tradition for planting trees and planted pine trees every spring at his beloved Mack’s Creek. Mr. Sperry enjoyed spending time in the outdoors with his friends and his dogs hunting and fishing. He made many trips to Montana elk hunting; pheasant hunting in Iowa and duck hunting in every puddle in the Midwest. In 2005 David and his wife, Kathleen, took the adventure of his lifetime, embarking on a 2 ½ month RV trip to Alaska where he loved fishing in the Kenai River. In 2007 he enjoyed three trips to Canada, canoeing through the Boundary Waters. Mr. Sperry is survived by his loving wife Kathleen (Richards) Sperry; mother Mary Sperry; brother Dr. Brent Sperry and wife Shannon; niece Erin Sperry; nephew Michael David Sperry; and by a host of dedicated and loyal friends. David was preceded in death by his father Dr. Earle G. Sperry in 2006; and his beloved lab, Mack on March 14, 2009.
