Stephen "Papa Smurf" Stegeman, age 64, of Blue Springs, MO, passed away on February 22, 2024. He was born on December 6, 1959. He was a 30 year heart transplant survivor, who has defied the odds time and time again. He received 2 kidney transplants and countless other lifesaving operations.
Steve, commonly known as Papa Smurf, was a beloved individual known for his stern yet compassionate nature. He was stubborn, but always willing to lend a helping hand, reliable, smart, and loyal, with a touch of humor that brightened the lives of those around him. Steve enjoyed spending time at the lake, off roading, and especially spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his unwavering presence and availability whenever someone needed assistance.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Carolyn, and his sons, Matthew and partner Suzi, and Bradley and his partner Megan; brother, Brian Stegeman; nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Eldon Stegeman, and mother, Kaye Stegeman.
Steve was an Honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, with the tribal name Two Hearts, a testament to his strength and spirit.
Papa Smurf’s last act of kindness was donating his corneas to help give two other people the gift of sight.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or Wayside Waifs in memory of Steve.
Steve will be cremated and a Celebration of Life Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Family will greet guests between the hours of 1:00 – 3:00 pm.
Steve "Papa Smurf" Stegeman will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
