Shirley Stewart

November 28, 1942 — June 10, 2014

Shirley D. Stewart
Shirley D. Stewart, 71, of Independence, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital East in Lee’s Summit, Mo. Shirley was born November 28, 1942, in Miller County, Mo. She was the daughter of Eugene and Lola Porter. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Florence Comstock, Joan Palmer, Betty Porter, and brothers Rick Porter and Robert Porter. Shirley still worked full-time at Missouri Gas Energy in Kansas City as a mail clerk and had been there for 28 years. She never met a stranger and would often stop and talk to the many people she delivered mail to in the building. For approximately 10 years she worked two jobs. She worked at Target a couple of days a week in the evening. If you were in a hurry her line was not the line to get in as she loved visiting with her customers. She was a hard worker and very dedicated employee. She would never call in sick unless she was really sick and still went to work at times. If you wanted Shirley’s opinion on a subject it was best not to ask her unless you really wanted her opinion and how she felt about the subject. She was always ready and willing to give you her opinion. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Penny Adams of Independence, Mo., and her husband, Tom, and their children, Ashley Pennington and her husband, Adam, and Tyler and Connor Adams. She is also survived by a sister Mary Porter, and two brothers, Roy Porter and his wife Sharon of Las Vegas, Nevada and Rocky Porter and his wife Malinda of Kansas City, Mo. Shirley was a great mother, wonderful grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by all especially her family. She was the glue that held them together. The most important thing in her life was her family, especially her three grandchildren who she could never spend enough time with. She attended their school events, sporting events and enjoyed every minute. Unless you had hours to spend listening about her grandchildren it was best not to ask. Grandma Shirley always had an excuse for them when they were in trouble or didn’t play well in a game. The family will receive friends for visitation from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, Mo., 64055. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mt. Washington Cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Everyone is invited to a dinner to celebrate the life of Shirley after the service at the cemetery at Christ United Methodist Church, 14506 East 39th St S, Independence, MO 64055. Shirley had a heart of gold and that will be truly missed by all. Online condolences may be expressed at www.speakschapel.com (Arrangements: Speaks Suburban Chapel (816) 373-3600)
