Larry Dean Stoner, age 75 passed away on October 31, 2021 in Kansas City, Kansas. Larry was born at the Independence “Sanitarium” in Independence, Missouri on September 6, 1946. Being born in a sanitarium might explain Larry Dean’s unique personality however it was really a hospital in Independence Missouri. If you lived in Independence during those years, many of you were born in this hospital. He was the son of Harley James Stoner and Arlyne C. Waage. Larry did not live a conventional life. His father was in the Navy and gone many times. He was raised by a village that included a variety of loving family members including Edgar and Grace Stoner, Clarence and Emma Waage, RT. and Rozella Breshears and Blaine Stoner.
Larry attended William Chrisman High School the class of 1964. He enlisted in the Army and served during the Vietnam War and went on to college at Central Missouri State to earn a degree in Political Science. He did not live on campus and drove to classes every day after working night shift at Hallmark cards with high school friend Larry Titus.
He married Sheryl Skinner on December 27, 1966 and to this union was born Kimberly Stoner.
He married Connie Schnirch Winter on July 2, 1971 in Adrian, Missouri. Their witnesses were Larry’s uncle and aunt, Rosella Breshears and R.T Breshears, along with Larry’s daughter Kimberly. The marriage was conducted in a pastor’s home in Adrian, Missouri. After the ceremony they all went to a Dairy Crème for ice cream. To this union was born Grant Stoner and Colin Stoner. Larry was also stepfather to Julie Winter who lived with Larry and Connie Stoner from age 3 to age 17. Larry and Connie hosted three AFS students through the years that became their sons and daughters. Ryoko Miwa Yamada from Japan was our first addition to the family. Next came Michele Petruzzelli from Italy and finally Helena Cederlof from Sweden. During Larry and Connie’s 50 years of marriage many of their children’s friends called Larry and his wife Connie their bonus Mom and Dad. All were welcome in their home any time anywhere.
Larry worked at Hallmark Cards before and after leaving the Army. He then went to work as a stockbroker for 20 years before retiring at the age of 49.
Larry was a member of the Reorganized Church of the Latter-Day Saints (now called Community of Christ) and attended Second Church in Independence, Missouri. Larry enjoyed coaching football after his retirement in the Independence School District. He continued to follow Independence School District sports until his last moments.
He loved coaching, playing golf, traveling, and watching college and professional sports. Larry and his wife had opportunity to travel to many places across the globe where so many memories were made. He has friends in Japan, Italy, England, and Sweden. He and his family traveled to many places in the United States to visit family and friends. His other passion was playing and watching golf.
Larry was ornery, feisty, irritating at times, life of the party. He was always joking but offered guidance to those that came to him for advice. He loved dancing and speaking his mind. He most definitely got those traits from his father Harley Stoner. His jokes sometimes missed the mark, but his heart was in the right place. He loved deeply and will leave a void in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.
Larry loved his family above all else. He is survived by his wife, friend, and companion Connie of 50 years. He was fortunate to have a stepmother Louise Stoner. His children include Julie Musgrove (Paul), Kimberly Stoner, Grant Stoner (Valerie), Colin Stoner (Laura Norris). Ryoko Miwa-Yamada (Kenya), Michel Petruzzelli (Marta Sabazzi), Helena Soler (Oskar).
He adored his grandchildren and was blessed with Jessica Buckallew (Justin), Joel Stuart (Chelsea), Kylie Eckman (Scott), Makenzie Musgrove, Wyatt Stoner and Naomi Stoner. Great grandchildren: Johnathan and Juliana Gaines, Kynlea, Remi and Lincoln Stuart, Suzuki and Saya Yamada, Eliot and Fiona Soler. He is also survived by his brother Rick Stoner (Patty), Rose Knight (Denny), Mie Ling Watson (Terry). He was preceded in death by his mother Arlyne Farris, father Harley Stoner, son Grant Stoner, and grandson Caleb Brainard.
