Joseph “Joe” Stringer, Jr., age 91, of Buckner, Missouri passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017 in his home, surrounded by family.
Joe was born November 28, 1925 in Eagle Rock, Missouri, the sixth son of Joe and Anna (Burris) Stringer. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946 in the European theater of World War II. On August 27, 1949 Joe was united in marriage to Mary Ann Munson; together they raised nine children.
Joe was employed for more than 40 years by Jack Cooper Transport Co. in Kansas City. In his spare time, he was an avid gardener and fisherman, supplying produce and fish to many in the Buckner community and beyond. He also enjoyed whittling, playing guitar and singing, and attending the music jam sessions on Friday evenings at the VFW hall in Buckner. He was always looking for ways to help people in the community.
Joe is survived by: four sons, Kenneth Stringer (Angie) of Lee’s Summit, MO, Randy Stringer (Cheri) of North Kansas City, MO, Phillip Stringer (Kim) of Buckner, and Tony Stringer (Sandy) of Overland Park, KS; three daughters, Joann Peck of Buckner and Eagle Rock, MO, Gail Stringer of Sibley, MO, and Nancy Nichols Hudanish (Steve) of Benton, AR; one son-in-law, Bob Barksdale of Buckner; one brother E.L. (Luke) Stringer (Wilma Jean) of Clifton, CO, and one sister Elsie Cooper (Ken) of Cassville, MO; sixteen grandchildren: Shawna Flowers, Reginald Leverette, Marquita Leverette, Bryan Stringer, Alisha Wetzel, David Stringer, Ben Stringer, Pamela Stringer, Billy Barksdale, Rob Barksdale, Chris Stringer, Adam Stringer, Jason Stringer, Shannon Clayton, Cody Stringer, and Stacy Stringer; 37 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and hundreds upon hundreds of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Joe was preceded in death by: his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann Stringer; son and daughter-in-law, Ronny and Paula Stringer; daughter Karen Barksdale; his parents; brothers Aaron Stringer, Bud Stringer, George Stringer, Herman Stringer, John Stringer, and Verlin Stringer; and sister Dorothy Fairchild.
Visitation will be Friday, September 8, 6:00-8:00 PM at Speaks Buckner Chapel. Celebration of Life will be Saturday, September 9, 4:00 PM at Buckner United Methodist Church. Committal service will be Monday, September 11, 10:00 AM at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville.
