John Cameron Stuart, best known as “JC”, was born in Reeding, OK on Aug. 6, 1915. In 1918 the family moved to Los Angeles. JC graduated from Graceland College, Lamoni, IA and from UCLA with a major in Economics. While working at Sears, he was asked to take appointment, with the now-named Community of Christ. In the next ten years he served as a pastor in Cameron, St. Joseph, St. Louis and Kansas City. In 1941 he married Eleaner Fairbanks in the Stone Church. Future church assignments included District President, Chicago District; District President, London, Ontario, Canada; Pastor, Washington, DC; Campus Minister, Graceland College; and Director of Administrative Services, World Church. In 1972 he was ordained to the Council of Twelve Apostles where he served until his retirement in 1982. In this latter capacity, his assignments included the Pacific Islands, the British Isles and Northern Europe with outreach to Rome, Italy, East Germany and Israel. JC enjoyed the study, preparation and delivery of sermons and continued to accept preaching assignments until the end.
JC died at Center Point Medical Center of Independence on Sept. 5, 2007.
His survivors include his wife, Eleaner; daughter Linda Koehler, Lee’s Summit, MO; son John Cameron Stuart and wife Sallie, Las Vegas, NV; six grandchildren: Piper Koehler, Kansas City, MO; Laura Henaghan and husband Chris, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Jesse Stuart and wife Jodilyn, Nashville, TN; Christine Barker and husband Cary, Towson MD; Molly Ancell and husband Christopher, Las Vegas, NV; Joseph Cameron Stuart, Reno, NV and one great-grandson, Cameron Charles Ancell, Las Vegas, NV.
His sister Velma Engle, grandson David Koehler and son-in-law Bruce Koehler preceded JC in death.
Visitation will be at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Friday, Sept. 14, from 6:30-8:00 pm. The Memorial Service will be at 7:00 pm, Sat., Sept. 15 at the Community of Christ Stone Church, 1012 W. Lexington, Independence, MO.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Outreach International.
