Surrounded by the warmth of her adoring family Betty Karen Jensen Sturgis peacefully left us at 3:45 pm on Monday, June 27th, 2016, at St. Luke’s East Hospital. Gram, as she named herself, suffered from heart failure.
Born in Kingsville, Missouri on May 18th, 1927 she was 87 years old. Betty was the 7th child of 8 children born to Myrtle Marie Sissal and Jacob Niels Jensen.
She was particularly proud of her Danish heritage. Her father had emigrated from Copenhagen to found a thriving road construction company in the Midwest. His sister Karren was her namesake. Betty’s grandfather was the landscape architect for Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.
A longtime Lake Lotawana resident, Betty was an avid traveler. With her husband, John A. Sturgis Jr. (deceased in 1996) they covered the continental US and Mexico. Gram visited “The Continent” with her daughter, granddaughter, and two friends. They traveled from London by car down the boot and as far north in Scotland as the North Sea would permit. Edinborough provided their last destination and trip home. Betty traveled to Spain with her older sister Neoma Darrah (deceased 2011).
Gram was a skillful gardener, building beautiful gardens where ever she lived.
Roses were her favorite flower providing abundant blooms for everyone’s delight. She anxiously awaited the arrival of spring heralded by the song of the little wren. The outdoors and her gardens were her playground until the frost browned all.
She is survived by her younger brother, Jacob Jensen, two daughters, Diana L. Swezy, Susan K. Wagner and a son in law, David L. Wagner of Lake Lotawana. She was blessed with two surviving granddaughters, Katelyn J. Logan and Anna L. Buser. Gram delighted in five grandchildren, Jack T. Logan, William S. Logan, Caroline E. Logan, Henry L. Buser and Claire E. Buser, just 4 weeks old.
Betty was guided to her final destination by those that have preceded her in death, her devoted husband, John and loving granddaughter, Elizabeth Wagner. Betty will be laid to rest alongside her husband, John, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Independence, Missouri. May her roses be ever blooming.
